The 48th Regiment NYS Volunteers at Fort Pulaski

Webmaster's Note:  The roster and record book is a detailed account of that unit during the Civil War as written by Abraham Palmer, D.D.  Palmer was the youngest enlisted man in the 48th Regiment during the war.  In 1881 the regiment reunited on the occasion of receiving their captured battle flags.  The project of collecting and publishing details of the companies, battles, histories of the group fell to Palmer. I own the book that belonged to my great-great-grandfather, Joseph Hutt, who served in Company A.  I have met other descendants of the 48th Regiment online and given them copies of the book as well as answering queries to genealogical researchers.  The soldiers are indexed according to company and then rank.  It contains chapters, or sketches, of each company and chapters on the battles the unit engaged in.  The details of the assault on Fort Wagner are chilling.  The book is dedicated to the descendants of the soldiers.  Palmer's narrative is outstanding. The book has more than 350 pages.   Please bookmark this page and check back for the updated chapters.
